Lake Charles Methanol II, LLC (LCM) is a Clean Hydrogen project located near Lake Charles, LA that will use advanced natural gas reforming technology and permanent carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) to produce low-carbon hydrogen for conversion to Blue Methanol (Project)
LCM’s technology achieves a 99% carbon emissions reduction in the production of hydrogen and enables the Project to implement CCS.
The Project will produce a multi-use hydrogen carrier fuel that will help decarbonize domestic and international chemical and energy industries

Clean Hydrogen Production
Clean Hydrogen Production — The Project embodies the new hydrogen economy, using auto-thermal reformer technology with CCS to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide in the production of hydrogen. Low-carbon hydrogen will be converted into low-carbon methanol, a hydrogen carrier fuel that can play an important role in helping de-carbonize the global economy.
Economic Benefits
New Manufacturing and Construction Jobs — Up to 750 workers will be onsite per day during peak construction periods, with a high percentage of the workers expected to be hired locally. There will be approximately 200 full-time employees plus contractors at the LCM facility receiving wages above the Calcasieu Parish average, as well as jobs created from multiplier effects in the region.
Low Carbon Blue Methanol
Conversion to Blue Methanol — LCM’s unique configuration of advanced technology with carbon capture and sequestration enables world-scale production of low-cost, low-carbon intensive Blue Methanol as a hydrogen carrier. LCM’s Blue Methanol will have a very low life-cycle carbon intensity, providing an attractive low-carbon product for its global customers.
Lake Charles Site
Lake Charles, LA Site — LCM will be a $5 billion investment in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Louisiana is a great place to do business, and LCM will be located at a premium site owned by the Port. The Project will bring local, regional, and even national benefits and help the state continue its leading role in clean energy and large-scale carbon capture and sequestration projects.
Carbon Capture & Sequestration
Carbon Capture and Sequestration — LCM’s technology will employ CCS and reduce hydrogen production carbon emissions by 99%. The Project will capture and sequester approximately 1 million metric tons of CO2 per year. The CO2 will be safely and permanently stored in deep saline aquifer formations under a long-term agreement with a sequestration services provider.

Commercializing Innovative Technology — LCM is an applicant to the Department of Energy’s loan guarantee program for innovative energy projects. The goal of this program is to jump-start the development of a new generation of clean energy projects to advance America’s energy and economic future.
